Canterbury rape sentence delayed

3:05 pm on 5 February 2014

A North Canterbury teenager who admitted raping a 17-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl on the same day will remain in prison for another 19 weeks after his scheduled sentencing was delayed on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old man, who has name suppression, appeared in the Christchurch District Court.

Police said that in October last year, he raped the 17-year-old in a car near the Christchurch airport then abducted the girl from a rural North Canterbury playground some time later and raped her.

He pleaded guilty to five charges relating to the abduction and rapes in the Christchurch District Court in November.

He was arrested following a police pursuit which resulted in his vehicle crashing into a power pole.

The man will be sentenced on 30 April after the judge has assessed medical reports.
