Telecom says it's being as pro-active as possible to prevent the attacks which have plagued its Yahoo/Xtra email system over the last 18 months.

Last week Telecom was forced to lock the accounts of some users after tens of thousands were hacked.

Retail chief executive Chris Quin told Morning Report that the latest attack involved

breach of a third party data password.

He said it emphasises the importance of customers having a unique email password.

Mr Quin said the Yahoo/Xtra system is as well protected as any of the major services, but there's been an escalation world-wide in attacks by hackers.

Telecom reviewed its partnership with Yahoo/Xtra after almost 90,000 customers came under a separate spam attack last year, but its contract is to December next year and it has no plans to change at the moment.
