Huge demand for Gallipoli tickets

4:08 pm on 31 January 2014

Nearly 10 times more people than there are places have applied to go into a ballot for tickets to attend centenary commemoration services at Gallipoli next year.

Some 950 double tickets for the Anzac Day event are available to New Zealanders.

The ballot closes at midnight on Friday and 9000 applications have been received by the afternoon.

Defence Force spokesperson John McLeod says the response has far exceeded expectations and it is pleasing that a cross-section of people have applied, not just descendants of war veterans who fought in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.

Mr McLeod says the ballot will be drawn in late February and successful people have six months to confirm travel bookings. Only ticket holders will be allowed to attend the commemoration in Turkey.

For safety reasons, attendance at the event is restricted to 10,000 members of the public.
