Measles alert after church service

7:21 pm on 27 January 2014

Public health officials say unvaccinated people who attended an Auckland church service should isolate themselves now that a case of measles in the congregation has been confirmed.

Auckland Regional Public Health says the infected person went to the Victory Christian Church in Freemans Bay on 19 January while they were infectious but before they developed symptoms.

Medical officer of health Cathy Pikholz says anyone at the service who has not been vaccinated against measles should isolate themselves at home until Monday 3 February.

Dr Pikholz says if people do develop symptoms, they should not go to their GP as they could infect others in the waiting room. They should instead call ahead to explain the situation and get advice.

Early measles symptoms include fever, a runny nose, cough, red eyes and small white spots inside the mouth. The measles rash only develops three to four days later.
