Labour MP Sue Moroney says the incident of a nine-year-old boy apparently drunk at a Hamilton skate park will be the first test of a new law making it an offence to supply alcohol to a minor without parental consent.
Hamilton MPs will be meeting with police next week to voice their disquiet about the case which came to light in a video posted online.
The footage on YouTube showed the boy swaying and struggling to walk, while holding a can of pre-mixed bourbon and cola.
Police investigating the case say adults, but not the boy's mother, supplied the alcohol and charges are possible.
Hamilton-based MP Sue Moroney said she wants to make sure whoever provided the alcohol is held to account.
She said there is something very wrong about any adult thinking it is fun, entertaining or appropriate to get a child drunk.
