Southland Regional Council expects only minor flooding from swollen rivers following a day of heavy rain in the region.
The headwaters of Southland rivers, including the Mataura and Oreti, peaked overnight. The most affected was the Waikaia River, which rose 1.74 metres above its normal level.
The council on Wednesday night night activated flood warnings but duty flood warning officer Dianne Elliotte said the rain has since eased and there should be only minor flooding of some roadways and paddocks.
She said campers and others should still be vigilant as floodwaters could take one to two days to move down rivers and streams.
