Wellington food charity the Freestore is planning to reopen its doors in 2014 after a break of more than two years.
The organisation gives away donated food and had to leave its central city premises in December 2011.
It has now been given resource consent to operate out of a renovated shipping container in the car park of St Peter's church on Willis Street.
Freestore operations manager Benjamin Johnson says his team is now awaiting building consent and hopes to be back in business in the first half of this year.
Mr Johnson says the container, architectural designs and building work have been donated by local businesses.
