Christchurch Hospital's Emergency Department had one of its busiest nights ever on New Year's Eve.
The Canterbury District Health Board says the department was about twice as busy as normal on Tuesday, with most incidents alcohol-related and staff have never had a busier night.
Around much of the rest of the country emergency departments said the night was fairly typical for New Year's Eve.
In Wellington, the Emergency Department dealt with 16 patients with alcohol-related issues, which is double what the department sees on a typical Saturday night, but not considered overly busy.
In Auckland and Nelson, the emergency departments were reported as being averagely busy for the time of year.
