Cycleways maintenance costly exercise

Some operators of bike trails that are part of the national cycleway say the runaway success of the trails is creating maintenance problems.

Tens of thousands of cyclists are biking the country's 23 trails, and businesses are booming. However, trail operators say high maintenance costs are hard to fund.

The Government invested $50 million in the national cycleway and local communities $30 million.

The bodies set up to operate the trails acknowledge that maintenance was always expected to be their responsibility, but the cost for some has been overwhelming due to the popularity of cycle tracks and want the Government to chip in.

Associate Minister of Tourism Chris Tremain says a group has been formed to look at how the Government can contribute and there is likely to be some money for maintenance announced in the 2014 Budget in May.
