Radio New Zealand has announced that Guyon Espiner will be the new co-host on Morning Report, taking over from Geoff Robinson in April.

Espiner has been a political editor for Television New Zealand and the Sunday Star-Times, and has presented TVNZ's Q + A programme on Sundays.

He also worked on TV3 programmes The Vote and 3rd Degree and has been in journalism for 20 years.

Radio New Zealand's chief executive Paul Thompson described Espiner as an incisive interviewer with an impressive career and impeccable journalistic credentials.

Mr Thompson said he has a strong understanding of the political and commercial worlds, and an extensive network of contacts.

Espiner will co-present Morning Report with Simon Mercep.

Geoff Robinson announced his retirement in November this year. He first joined the Morning Report team when the programme was introduced in 1975 and has worked alongside 30 co-presenters.
