Police in Bay of Plenty used a rescue helicopter to track a stolen car after they abandoned a pursuit on Boxing Day morning due to high speeds.
Police say the car had been driven from Rotorua towards Paengaroa, then into Whakatane, through Edgecumbe and back towards Rotorua.
The vehicle, with just the driver inside, ran over road spikes at Lake Rotoma on State Highway 30.
Crew on the helicopter saw the car down a driveway. It car rolled as the police arried in the area and the driver attempted to turn it back on to the highway.
A 27-year-old man from Rotorua has been arrested.
