The Transport Agency is warning Christmas Eve motorists to watch out for high winds on the Desert Road and Rimutaka Hill Road near Wellington.
Police say congestion does not seem to be a problem on roads around the country on Tuesday evening.
However, one lane of State Highway 73 is closed near Arthur's Pass after a head-on smash that has left people trapped.
Two rescue helicopters are at the scene but no one has life-threatening injuries.
