Mum and teen son die in West Coast crash

A mother and her teenage son have died in a car crash at near Greymouth, on the West Coast.

The 43-year-old local woman and the 15-year old boy died when they car crashed off Taylorville Road, into a creek, at about 11am on Monday.

A boy aged three or four, who was also in the vehicle, has been taken to Grey Base Hospital.

Sergeant Dave Cross says their car was travelling downhill into a bend in wet conditions, before it went over the bank and landed upside down in the creek.

The Taylorville Road is closed and traffic is being diverted via Dobson.

Meanwhile, a truck and two cars have collided on the Hawke's Bay Expressway, closing State Highway 50 where it crosses the Ngaruroro River.

Police said one person with leg injuries had to be rescued from one of the cars, and tow trucks were removing the vehicles.
