Helicopter crashes in Antarctica

8:39 pm on 2 December 2013

A New Zealander is believed to be one of three people injured after a helicopter crash landed in Antarctica.

A pilot and two passengers, who work for the Australian Antarctic Division, crashed near Davis Station about 3am on Monday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it understands one of the people on board is a New Zealander and is in contact with the division to offer any assistance.

Radio New Zealand understands one of the three has back injuries; the other two who are injured are deemed stable.

A helicopter travelling with them landed immediately and has been helping the crew.

They had been surveying a nearby penguin colony at the time of the crash.

A rescue plan is being organised, but with limited visibility there is a strong chance that the injured will remain at the crash site overnight.
