Speed not a factor in West Coast crashes

A police investigation into two fatal motorcyle crashes near Haast on the West Coast this week has ruled out speed as a cause.

A 70-year-old man riding a home built trike on a Fire Service charity ride was killed instantly on Wednesday when he crashed into a bank on a straight stretch of State Highway 6. It is believed a mechanical failure was the blame.

Earlier, a man died on the same stretch of road when his bike and trailer he was towing crossed the centre line on a tight bend and crashed into a campervan coming the other way.
