Forum eyes food safety insurance idea

The chair of the Global Food Safety Forum says it is developing a first-of-its-kind world-wide food safety insurance that will address contamination and recall issues.

The three-day conference at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery is the first the Global Food Safety Forum has held outside Beijing, and is being attended by 150 delegates, from food safety regulators in New Zealand, Australia, China and the United States.

Forum chairperson Rick Gilmore says food safety insurance does not yet exist but the concept is being discussed with underwriters in China.

He says the forum is also launching online courses in food safety, and a series of workshops and training programmes on food fraud.
