A man has been charged with assault after another man died following what appears to have been a dispute between neighbours in Tolaga Bay, near Gisborne.
Police say they were called to Endeavour Street where they found a 40-year-old man in a critical condition on the road on Thursday about 8pm.
They say a 51-year-old man from Tolaga Bay came to the local police station a short time later.
Detective Sergeant Steve Smith, of Gisborne, says the man in now under police guard in hospital where he is being treated for an unrelated medical condition.
Mr Smith says further charges will be considered as the investigation continues.
A scene examination was being carried out on Friday and a post-mortem would be held on Saturday.
