Officials from 24 countries and the European Union are meeting in Tasmania to decide whether to protect Antarctica's Ross Sea.

It's the third attempt by New Zealand and the United States to protect 1.3 million square kilometres of the sea.

But for it to be signed off, there needs to be consensus from all the members of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

Radio New Zealand understands a handful of countries are still questioning the size of the area, and the impact on the toothfish fisheries under the proposal.

It is understood a sunset clause, where the reserve could be reviewed or expire, will be written into any deal.Periods ranging from five to 50 years have been suggested.

Negotiations end on Friday.
