The Engineering, Printing and Maufacturing Union says Air New Zealand has agreed to keep almost 200 engineers working in Auckland, for now.
The airline had wanted to shut its maintenance line servicing larger aircraft by the middle of next year saying it was preparing for future aircraft that would not need as much maintenance.
The union says Air New Zealand has now agreed to keep working on Boeing 777 aeroplanes and not outsource the work.
Union spokesperson Strachan Crang said it is not a permanent solution and the 189 positions will go if no alternatives are found in the next 18 months.
Mr Crang said the union will keep looking at options other than closing the facility. "Some of those things we've suggested to the company and they'll be giving some feedback over the next two weeks," he said.
