A man and a teenager have been charged with abducting a Dunedin woman on Saturday night.

Police allege the pair grabbed the 22-year-old woman at about 9.30pm in Vogel Street in Dunedin's warehouse precinct and tried to drag her into a white van.

Police say the woman bravely fought off her abductors with the help of three men who lived nearby.

A 36-year-old Motueka man was remanded in custody at the Dunedin District Court on Monday morning.

A 17-year-old, from Kaiapoi, appeared briefly and is expected to reappear in court on Monday afternoon to request bail.

Police believe the men intended to rape the woman, and have indicated more charges may follow.
