Murder charge follows attack on couple

A man charged with murdering a woman and the attempted murder of her husband in Auckland has appeared in court and has been remanded in custody for a forensic assessment.

The husband, who suffered life-threatening injuries, is in a serious but stable condition in Auckland Hospital.

The 34-year-old man, who has been granted interim name suppression, appeared in the Waitakere District Court on Thursday afternoon. The man is known to the couple.

His lawyer told the judge her client is seriously mentally unwell.

He has been remanded in custody at the Mason Clinic and will under go a psychiatric report on whether he is fit to enter a plea at his next appearance.

Officers say they were called to an assault at a house on Takahe Road in Titirangi just before 8pm on Wednesday. The woman was found dead at the property.

Police arrested the charged man after a manhunt in the area, with the police Eagle helicopter used in the search.
