A lawyer for Kim Dotcom says the internet entrepreneur is seeking about $5 million in compensation from police and the Government's spy agency.
The Megaupload founder is suing police and the Government Communications Security Bureau over the raid on his house in January 2012 and for what he alleges was illegal spying before the raid.
Mr Dotcom's lawyer William Akel says a statement of claim lodged at the High Court in Auckland seeks $5 million in compensation to be divided between Mr Dotcom, his wife Mona Dotcom and the couple's co-accused.
He says the claim argues that the raid and spying were both illegal and that police used unnecessary force during the raid.
Mr Dotcom's spokesperson and co-accused, Finn Batato, says there is no intention to make money from the claims.
He says Mr Dotcom is taking the proceedings because he believes the New Zealand public has a right to know about unlawful behaviour by the Government, and he will donate any damages to charity.
A Crown Law spokesperson says a statement of defence has been lodged in response.
The hearing is expected to take place next March.
