The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra has been told better marketing and sponsorship is the key to solving funding pressures.

Base funding from the Government for the orchestra is an annual $13.45 million or about 75% of its total revenue.

The Government wants that figure to be reduced to no more than 70% by 2015.

Arts, Heritage and Culture Minister Christopher Finlayson said the NZSO should no longer tour to areas with populations of less than 50,000 people, leaving it up to the four other orchestras to visit these areas.
