Showers turning to snow on the Rimutakas

7:49 pm on 5 September 2013

MetService says showers appear to have turned to snow on the Rimutaka hills north of Wellington and may do so in other places.

A forecaster said a cold snap that began on Wednesday has mostly moved away from the South Island and is making its way up the country.

Severe gale warnings were in place in Wellington on Wednesday night. MetService said winds reached speeds of up to 145km per hour at Mount Kaukau.

There were also strong gusty winds in Taranaki.

MetService says further north, showers will continue with heavy rain and the possibility of thunder in the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty.
