Oamaru retirement village wins public's backing

Council plans for a retirement village in Oamaru have been strongly backed by the town.

The Waitaki District Council gave its in-principle approval a month ago to the $12 to $15 million village, to be built on a hill above the town's former hospital.

It would be constructed by the council-owned company Waitaki District Health Services but run by two new council-controlled organisations.

The council says it has received more than 80 submissions on the proposal, with about 90% in support.

It plans to consider the submissions next Tuesday and make a final decision on the proposal two weeks later.
