Police investigate newborn's injuries

8:50 pm on 2 September 2013

Police in Invercargill have launched a criminal investigation into the circumstances that led to a newborn baby being hospitalised with life-threatening injuries.

They say emergency services were called to an incident at a Princes St house at 5.30am on Monday.

Police will not comment on the exact nature of the three-week-old girl's injuries, nor the relationship the adults of the house have with the baby.

However, they have confirmed they are not seeking anyone else outside the house in relation to the incident. They say the baby's parents were in the house at the time and are being spoken to.

The property remains cordopned off and under guard until a forensic examination can be carried out with help from ESR.

The baby girl has been flown to Starship Hospital in Auckland in a critical condition but police say because a criminal investigation is under way they won't be saying anything about the nature of her injuries.
