Double killing suspect dead

6:07 pm on 28 August 2013

Police say a man who took his own life at Woodhill Forest on Tuesday night was the ex-partner of a woman who died of gun shot wounds in a double homicide at a South Auckland home.

Glenys Stanton, 47, and Trevor Waite, 51, were killed at Mr Waite's home sometime between Friday night and Sunday morning.

Police say a man they believe was linked to the killings took his own life when he was approached by officers at Woodhill Forrest in West Auckland just before midnight.

Superintendent John Tims says friends of the unemployed 51-year-old from Waimauku told police on Tuesday that the man was distressed and in possession of a firearm.

Mr Tims says the evidence implies the man was responsible for the double homicide, but they need to gather hard evidence and there is a lot more work to do.

A firearm and a car belonging to the man have been recovered from the scene.

The man's name will be released after a postmortem is carried out.

The death will be subject to a full investigation and coroner's inquest.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority will also investigate.
