Police are going to court to confiscate a Rolls Royce that is linked to the convicted fraudster Michael Swann.

The blue 1922 luxury car was found three weeks ago in a shipping container at a Port Otago yard in Dunedin, by a member of the public.

Police say the vehicle is a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost with updated body parts, including Phantom 1 Rolls Royce parts.

Mr Swann was released on 31 July after four-and-a-half years in prison for stealing almost $16.8 million from the former Otago District Health Board.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Ferguson says records indicate Mr Swann paid a substantial fee for the vehicle but he would not say how much, or give any details of the vehicle's ownership.

Mr Ferguson says the police will be applying to the Civil Court to have the vehicle confiscated.

A court order still seeks proceeds from Mr Swann's crime.
