Drug dogs trained to sniff crime cash

Drug detector dogs are being trained to sniff out large amounts of cash.

Police Minister Anne Tolley and Customs Minister Maurice Williamson said a recent trial resulted in the seizure of over $350,000 in undeclared or hidden cash at Auckland international airport, and while carrying out search warrants.

Police are now training a further seven dogs to find cash and Customs another five.

The dogs will be able to detect cash amounts of over $10,000 in New Zealand, Australian and US currencies, as well as narcotics.

Mr Williamson said having the dual-trained detector dogs will increase Customs' effectiveness at the border.
