Review into land-based aquaculture legislation

8:54 am on 14 August 2013

The Government is to review legislation covering land-based aquaculture.

The Ministry for Primary Industries and the Department of Conservation will look into the regulations, which are viewed by many in the industry as cumbersome and complex.

The decision to review the rules follows a lengthy and costly court battle over New Zealand King Salmon's plan to establish four new farms in the Marlborough Sounds.

The company has gained approval, but the process cost it more than $10 million dollars.

Conservation Minister Nick Smith acknowledges it is very difficult to get approval for aquaculture facilities.

A series of workshops will be held in coming weeks as part of the regulatory review.
