Police have arrested three people in relation to the shooting of a Christchurch man in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A 22-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition in Christchurch Hospital after he was shot once in the chest on Harper Avenue.

Two men and a woman aged in their early 20s were found at a property in the suburb of Spreydon when the police searched it on Sunday afternoon.

All three have been charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm while one of the men has also been charged with the reckless discharge of a firearm and intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The woman is also charged with being an accessory after the fact.

All three are due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.

Police say just prior to the shooting there was an altercation between two groups of people who were known to each other, however they are not gang members.

They earlier said they had seized a van they believed to have been involved in the shooting.
