Too many lawyers, managers says mayoral contestant

3:24 pm on 7 August 2013

Long-serving Hamilton councillor Dave Macpherson has announced he will contest the city's mayoralty.

Mr Macpherson says he has never had the desire in the past to stand for mayor but believes the time has come for councillors to reassert themselves.

He says the council is now effectively run by lawyers and managers.

Mr Macpherson describes himself as fiercely independent and someone who backs the little person.

He is the fourth candidate to declare his nomination.

Current mayor Julie Hardaker is seeking re-election and two other candidates, Ian Hanley and Jack Gielen, also want the job.

Nominations for mayor and council close at midday on Friday 16 August.
