Wellington City Council says a lift shaft damaged by the earthquake last Sunday should be quake-proof by Monday evening.

Work to brace the structure to the side of the James Smith parking building began on Thursday because of worries it could fall in an aftershock.

The 10-storey shaft is a remnant of an unfinished building project from 20 years ago.

Nearby tenants include more than 60 apartment dwellers, two commercial buildings and the Downtown Community Ministry.

They have been unable to enter their buildings for nearly a week. The council said they should be able to go back on Tuesday.
