Schools cleared after quakes

The Ministry of Education says engineers have cleared the schools needing inspections following Sunday's shake and other earthquakes.

Structural engineers have been looking at schools in the Wellington region and in the upper South Island.

An inspection of 34 schools in the Wellington region identified minor damage at Wellington Girls College and Wellington High School, such as cracked plaster or broken windows, but nothing structural.

In the South Island, Marlborough Girls College, Marlborough Boys' College, Queen Charlotte College and Wairau Valley School have also been declared safe.

Work began on Friday at Seddon School, near the epicentre of the quakes, to remove its boiler chimney.
