DoC tracks in Otago damaged by rain and snow

5:52 am on 21 July 2013

Recent stormy weather in coastal Otago damaged walking tracks in the region.

The Department of Conservation manages 250km of track on both the coast and further inland.

It says heavy rain soaked the ground, causing flooding and slips, and heavy snow inland felled a number of trees, which blocked the paths.

DOC rangers are working to clear trees and put new gravel down on washed out tracks. Some areas need retaining walls built.

Trampers are advised to check the track they intend to use is open before heading out.
