100 arrested in drink driving operation in Auckland

A woman driving with an unrestrained child in the front seat was one of 100 people arrested as part of a drink driving operation in Auckland this weekend.

Police said they stopped 17,500 people at three locations from Friday night - Sunday morning.

Inspector Gavin Macdonald said another three people were caught suspected of driving under the influence of drugs.

He said the young people are actually leading the way and it's the 30 to 60-year-old age group that continues to drink and drive and treats it as a joke.

While 100 arrests was still far too many, he said he was pleased a lot of people are using taxis or getting a sober driver to take them home.
