Auckland suburbs deemed perfect for solar energy

New research suggests Auckland is sunny enough to make residential solar panels a worthwhile investment.

The Auckland University research shows putting solar panels on the region's suburban houses could generate enough electricity to run the homes, plus generate a surplus to power electric vehicles driven by the householders.

The study, published in the science journal Energy Policy, measured and mapped the city's solar energy potential.

Researcher Nirmal Nair says the roofs of Auckland's sprawling, low-density suburbs can capture more sun than compact, high-density zones.

He says that's because they have more roof space which can be used.

Nirmal Nair says cities in other countries, which have fewer hours of sunlight, are already making solar technology compulsory.
