Rock slip closes Kawarau Gorge

9:01 pm on 6 July 2013

The New Zealand Transport Agency says the Kawarau Gorge between Cromwell and Queenstown will remain closed until midday on Sunday.

Its Central Otago manager John Jarvis says part of an overhanging rock fell onto the road, and more rocks were starting to move.

He says it is hoped the rocks will fall naturally overnight, otherwise contractors will remove them on Sunday morning.

The alternative Crown Range route between Wanaka and Queenstown, was closed for snow, but has now reopened.
