Thursday, 15 October, marks World Rural Women's Day.

The theme is rural women at the heart of innovation.

Celebrations are being held around New Zealand to mark the occasion.

The idea to have a day honouring the work of rural woman was first put forward at the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing.

The United Nations says the event highlights the contribution that women make to their communities and the critical role they play in rural economies.

Rural Women New Zealand says the celebrations also focus on the UN's Year of Natural Fibres.
