Police say two people in a critical condition have been flown to hospital by rescue helicopter after their car fell 30 metres from a cliff at Orere Point southeast of Auckland.
A northern fire communications spokesperson says the people were cut from the car after it went over the cliff about 5km north of Waharau Park.
The spokesperson says four volunteer fire brigades attended the scene and cutting equipment was used to free the people.
She says at one point there were discussions about trying to move the car because of the rising tide.
