Man and two children rescued after car flipped

9:20 pm on 30 June 2013

A man, two children and five dogs have been rescued after the van and trailer they were travelling in flipped upside down and landed in a water-filled culvert.

Police say the van drifted to the left side of the road on State Highway Six in Southland, at about 3.40pm on Sunday.

The van hit the edge of the Lumsden North Culvert, flipped over and landed on its roof in the water.

Police say three car loads of passers-by rescued the boy and girl from the van, while the driver was cut out by the fire service, and is being treated for serious leg injuries in Dunedin hospital.
