Auckland and national Maori leaders have resolved to support a Treaty of Waitangi case against the lack of Maori representation on the Auckland super-city council.
The Government has ruled out designated Maori seats and is proposing an independent statutory board instead.
A hui was held on Friday to find ways of securing seats on the council.
Organiser Rau Hoskins says the Treaty case will be lodged by one of the mana whenua iwi from Auckland, Waiohua.
He says it will be based on the argument that Local Government Minister Rodney Hide ignored the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance about Maori seats.
