A man has been critically injured by a gunshot in what is believed to be a hunting accident south of Taupo.
The 69-year-old Tauranga man was hunting with companions on Wednesday night when he was believed to have been shot in the chest with a high powered rifle by other hunters.
He was flown by air ambulance from Taupo hospital to Waikato hospital overnight.
