Ticker tape parade to mark Southland Shield win

8:06 pm on 23 October 2009

A ticker tape parade will be held in Invercargill on Tuesday to celebrate Southland's first Ranfurly Shield win in 50 years.

Southland's 9-3 victory against Canterbury at AMI Stadium on Thursday should secure them a semifinal spot in the Air New Zealand Rugby Cup next weekend. The score was 3-3 at halftime.

It was Canterbury's fifth and final defence of the Ranfurly Shield for the season.

Southland last held the "Log o' Wood" in 1959 - for only one match.

A big crowd was at Invercargill airport on Friday to welcome the players returning from Christchurch.

Invercargill deputy mayor Neil Boniface says the parade will be held at 4pm on Tuesday through the central business district, ending with a reception at the Civic Theatre.

Mr Boniface says he would like to see as many supporters of the team as possible along the route and ticker tape will be handed out free of charge. The council has ordered nearly 40,000 rolls.
