Police chief makes personal plea for Aisling

The officer in charge of the investigation into the disappearance of Auckland toddler Aisling Symes has made a personal appeal to whoever has her, or knows where she is, to contact him directly.

The two-year-old was with her parents who were tidying up a property on Longburn Road in the suburb of Henderson when she disappeared about 5.30pm on Monday 5 October.

Police believe she is likely to have been abducted.

At a news conference on Sunday afternoon, Inspector Gary Davey said whoever has Aisling should not be scared or intimidated by police activity.

Mr Davey said the police just want to know where Aisling is.

He says the person responsible for her disappearance can call him on 0800 4247 5464.

Police are planning to further increase the number of staff on the investigation.

About 60 officers are currently involved in the inquiry, including staff brought in from Auckland City and Counties Manukau districts.

The team will be further bolstered on Monday, a police spokesperson says.

Police continued to canvas the area and talk to residents on Sunday but say they have no strong information.

Aisling 'only just learning to speak'

Aisling Symes' father says anyone who may have taken the two-year-old will find it hard to understand her as she was was only just learning to speak.

Alan Symes has told Irish broadcaster RTE his daughter had only just learned to say her name and had her own words for food and household items.

"If she asks for something it mightn't make sense to somebody who wouldn't know her," he said.

"Parents and close family would know more than likely, but that could be a problem if somebody's got her."

Mr Symes says he and his wife are trying to be positive and cling to hopes that their daughter is safe.

The couple has run through every single scenario of what may have happened, he said, including thinking that someone who is very lonely or who has mental health problems may have taken her.

Mr Symes says police hope his daughter is still in the local area.

Police have released a 10-second video of the toddler, showing her at a family home, in an effort to jog people's memories of possible sightings.
