A police officer convicted of drink driving expects to lose his job.

Detective Sergeant John Gualter was a CIB trainer at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua. He has been convicted for dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was also fined $1800 and disqualified from driving for nine months.

At his sentencing in the Porirua District Court on Friday, Gualter's lawyer said he expects the police to end his 23 year career over the incident.

Gualter had a blood alcohol reading 2.5 times the legal limit and was seen swerving dangerously on the motorway and mounting surburban footpaths.

An internal disciplinary process will begin in the coming weeks.
