Rules to restrict daily paua limit

6:48 pm on 10 September 2009

The Government has announced a new crackdown on paua poaching.

From 1 October, people will no longer be able to defend a large collection of paua in their freezer by saying it is the result of catches from previous days.

Fisheries Minister Phil Heatley says the rules will be changed to restrict the amount of paua people can have in their possession on any day.

This will be set at 20 paua, which is twice the daily bag limit.

Maori customary rights are not affected.

Mr Heatley says people should fish for a feed, not for the freezer.
