Father's Day present for many is less sleep

10:55 am on 6 September 2009

Fathers with babies under one year old get 42 minutes less sleep than the nightly average of 8½ hours.

Statistics New Zealand figures also show the average age of fathers with newborns is 33 years, four years older than the previous generation.

One in 100 babies has a father aged 50 years or over.

New Zealand men have an average of seven fewer Father's Days than mums have Mother's Days - since they usually start parenting later and women have longer life spans.

Last year 143 men got the ultimate gift on Fathers' Day - a brand new baby.
