Maori, Pacific family violence strategies launched

5:56 pm on 1 September 2009

New strategies aimed at understanding and eliminating family violence in Maori and Pacific communities have been launched at Parliament.

The five-year strategies were put together for the Ministry of Social Development's Taskforce for Action on Violence Within Families by the Maori Reference Group and the Pacific Advisory Group after meeting families and communities around the country.

The chair of the Government's Ministerial Committee on Family Violence, Tariana Turia, launched the strategies on Monday evening.

She says Maori and Pacific communities want to be trusted to come up with their own solutions to combat family violence, rather than be dictated to by the Government and its agencies.
