Surge in complaints to Insurance Ombudsman

3:48 pm on 10 August 2009

The number of complaints to the Insurance and Savings Ombudsman has risen by 20%.

Karen Stevens says her office has had 2000 complaints in the past year, an increase of 20%, with 242 of the complaints needing full investigation.

She believes the financial climate has something to do with the increase, with people more keen to follow up now if they have a problem with their insurance company.

Ms Stevens says insurance companies are also looking more closely at claims to ensure they are valid.
